Color Has An Impact

Color can shape how a space feels and how people respond within it. Research into learning environments suggests that color, lighting and other design elements can influence attention, concentration, mood and cognitive performance.

For students, that means the colors surrounding them every day can help create environments that feel more welcoming, stimulating, calming or engaging. Learning In Color uses color intentionally to transform ordinary school spaces into environments designed to support learning, creativity and a greater sense of connection.

Atlanta Smart Academy

A School Transformed, Inside and Out

When Atlanta SMART Academy discovered Learning In Color on Instagram in 2023, its school environment looked very different. Grey walls filled the interior, and the outdoor courtyard was little more than concrete. Since then, Learning In Color has helped transform nearly every part of the campus, from hallways and lockers to fencing and the outdoor courtyard, creating a vibrant environment that reflects the creativity and energy of its students.

The transformation took place during an important period of growth for Atlanta SMART Academy. The charter middle school opened in 2021 with approximately 125 students, grew to 209 students by the 2022–23 school year, and served 221 students by 2024–25. Along with that growth in enrollment, student proficiency in reading and math has also increased by 10%.

Today, Atlanta SMART Academy has not only transformed the look and feel of its campus, but continues to build an environment that supports, inspires, and uplifts its growing community of students.
